Why This Matters for Paediatric Care

Children are not small adults in clinical environments. Their curiosity, stress, disorientation (especially post-procedure), and lack of awareness mean that traditional adult-safety systems do not always suffice. In paediatric wards, the stakes are higher: any unattended movement can lead to serious harm or emotional distress for families and staff. By deploying a purpose-built child safeguarding system, hospitals reinforce clinical safety, parental trust, and institutional reputation - while reducing the burden on staff monitoring and manual supervision.

Exceptional Customer Support for over 20 Years

We're trusted for more than just our security and reliability, hospitals and distribution partners trust us for our expert installation, hands-on training, and support. We ensure your staff are equipped with the knowledge to use the system effectively while providing the highest level of service 24/7, 365 days a year.

Get in Touch

The Paediatric Security & Child Absconding Prevention System from Xtag Medical is a specialist safeguarding solution designed for UK hospitals and paediatric units. It helps prevent the unauthorised movement or absconding of children and young people, ensuring safety across paediatric wards, children’s hospitals, and mixed-care environments.

Each child is fitted with a lightweight, tamper-proof tag. The tag communicates continuously with RF readers positioned at key exit points. If a tag is cut, removed, or passes through an unauthorised exit, the system responds instantly, triggering local alarms and flashing light strobes. Staff are instantly notified via the PC client allowing immediate and coordinated response.

The system also prevents paediatric patients from leaving the ward by intelligently monitoring exit points. If a child lingers near a secured doorway, the system automatically locks the exit until they move a safe distance away, then reopens once the area is clear.

The system integrates seamlessly with existing hospital infrastructure, including access control and CCTV, creating a unified safety network. Its configurable logic allows different responses based on location, time of day, or patient profile - for example, silent alerts for high-sensitivity wards or full lockdown for critical areas.

Beyond the immediate security benefits, the platform provides real-time visibility and incident traceability. A live dashboard shows all active tags, patient movements, and door status, while event logs enable retrospective review for CQC and internal safety audits. The system can also generate automatic reports to identify trends - helping Trusts improve operational safety.

For clinical teams, this technology reduces manual supervision burden and provides peace of mind that children are protected without impeding their independence. For estates and security managers, it ensures compliance with NHS safeguarding standards while maintaining efficient, interoperable site security. And for families, it delivers visible reassurance that every possible measure is in place to keep their children safe.

Alarms and Alerts

Our Paediatric Absconding Prevention solution is a a Real-Time Locating System (RTLS) which prevents paediatric patients from leaving their ward. The system has 5 primary alarm and alert functions:

Alarm Type Description Event
Exit Alarm Occurs when a tagged infant approaches an open exit (typically within 1-2 metres of the exit point). Triggers a ward-wide alarm and a visual alert notification is displayed on the Touchscreen Client.
Tamper Alarm Occurs when the ankle strap of a baby tag has been cut without the infant being discharged. Triggers a ward-wide alarm, all exits lockdown, and a visual alert notification is displayed on the Touchscreen Client.
Tag Off Alarm Occurs when a baby tag has been removed without cutting the strap. Triggers a ward-wide alarm, all exits lockdown, and a visual alert notification is displayed on the Touchscreen Client.
Lost Signal Alarm Occurs when a baby tag has not bee seen by the system for a 2+ seconds. This function exists to provide protection in the rare instance an abductor attempts to disguise the radio-frequency transmission and deter the system. Triggers a ward-wide alarm, all exits lockdown, and a visual alert notification is displayed on the Touchscreen Client.
Loiter Alert Occurs when a tagged infant approaches a closed exit (typically within 1-2 metres). Triggers a local exit lockdown, forcing the exit to remain closed until the infant is within a safe distance from the exit point, and a visual alert notification is displayed on the Touchscreen Client.

Key system advantages include:

  • Proactive protection - early detection prevents incidents before they occur.
  • Customisable alerts - tailored to each ward’s workflow and patient risk level.
  • Low-maintenance design - long-life batteries and simple re-arming procedures.
  • Discreet operation - small form factor and minimal noise to preserve a calm ward environment.
  • Scalable architecture - easily expanded to additional wards or buildings as needs evolve.
  • Data-driven insight - trend and alarm analysis to support continuous improvement.

By combining proven Active UHF technology with NHS-specific workflows, Xtag Medical’s system transforms how hospitals approach paediatric safeguarding - moving from reactive response to intelligent, proactive protection.

Core Features & Benefits

Tamper-Detect Patient Tag

The band is engineered to resist removal or tampering; any attempt to breach it triggers an instant alert (e.g. “Tag Off”) so staff can respond before escalation.

Smart Zone Readers & Exit Monitoring

If a child approaches an exit zone without clearance, alerts are triggered and doors can be locked automatically.

Intelligent Exit Alarm Control

Exit points are continuously monitored using intelligent door sensors. If a tagged child attempts to pass through a restricted doorway, the system instantly triggers an exit alarm.

Data & Audit Trail Capabilities

The system keeps a history of every tag movement, event, door state, and override. These logs support post-incident review, quality assurance, trend tracking, and compliance reporting.

The difference between Active UHF and Wi-Fi

Choosing the right technology is crucial for ensuring the highest level of infant security. Xtag Medical’s Active UHF technology operates on a dedicated, highly secure standalone network, eliminating reliance on the hospital’s Wi-Fi. This prevents risks associated with signal interference, network latency, and potential Wi-Fi outages, which could put infants at risk.
